Fingerprinting For Canadian Private Industry Employment

Fingerprinting is an essential part of the application process for more and more  jobs in the private sector. That’s because certain sensitive work requires criminal background checks – and to conduct these background checks, fingerprinting is often required.

For the employer

Not every employer is permitted to use criminal background checks or vulnerable sector checks when hiring an employee. If, however, there are valid occupational requirements for a criminal record check, they can be an invaluable tool.

We highly recommend fingerprinting-based criminal record checks. Fingerprints are more reliable than name-only criminal record checks – it’s much easier to change a name than it is to change your fingerprints.

Background check process and what’s needed

Criminal record checks that involve the use of fingerprints are known as “certified criminal record checks” – they are conducted through the RCMP database (RTID). In order to process these background checks, the applicant will have to provide their personal information (which can be obtained from driver’s licences, passports, etc.), the reason they’re applying, and their fingerprints.

In the case of background checks for employment, the applicant needs to provide the name of their job title and employer, in full. Make sure to provide accurate job title/employer name to your applicants in order to speed up the process.

The fingerprinting process is usually within 10 minutes or less.

Perform the background check and fingerprinting

The background check, via use of fingerprints, is performed by the RCMP, while the fingerprinting can be obtained by any accredited third-party provider – like FASTCHECK!

FASTCHECK  can provide the fingerprinting services required for background checks performed through the RCMP. Contact us today for fingerprinting. We also offer mobile fingerprinting. This means we’ll come to your office and perform all fingerprinting on-site. We offer discounts if multiple fingerprints are required at the same time.

This means you can save time and money by using our mobile fingerprinting services – we highly recommend it for when you have a number of new hires who all need fingerprinting done.

For the candidate or employee

In certain careers, your employer may ask you for a background check. For certain background checks, specifically certified criminal record checks, you will be required to provide fingerprints so that the RCMP can conduct a search of the National Repository of Criminal Records.

Background check process

In order to perform a certified criminal record check, you’ll need to provide your information (name, address, etc.) – for this reason, you’ll need to provide 2 pieces of ID, 1 of which has to be a Govt issued picture ID like a driver’s licence or passport, and the second piece of ID does not have to be a picture ID – a health card is a great 2nd piece of ID choice.

The fingerprints themselves can be taken within about 10 minutes – your employer may ask you to go to a certified fingerprinting company, like ours, or they may request a mobile fingerprinting service. If the latter option is chosen, you’ll be able to have your fingerprints taken in the office.

Are employers legally allowed to check my background?

While employers are legally allowed to check your background, they can only do so:

  • With your consent
  • If it’s relevant to the position you’re being considered for

Employers have to exercise a high degree of caution when conducting criminal record checks – in almost all cases, your employer should only be conducting the check after you’ve been hired. If they’re conducting the check as a part of the interview process, you should be suspicious – consider declining the fingerprinting process.

What are they allowed to check?

Certified criminal record checks are comprehensive – they check through the National Repository of Criminal Records to determine whether or not you’ve ever been charged with or convicted of a crime. With your consent, any relevant information from the National Repository of Criminal Records can be shared with them.
